Today, we’ll be talking about color palette – what it is and how it is helpful to your brand. And well, the in betweens, too.

First, let me ask you this question. Did you know that people make a subconscious judgment about a product within 90 seconds of seeing it? For real! But that’s not the end of it. It is said that between 62% and 90% of that assessment is based on color alone.

How crazy! Now that I know about this study, I understand that I definitely have to up my color game. Now what?

That takes us to the next part of things you ought to know.

What is a color palette?

Color Palettes are a display of tones that will be used for visual identity.

I just want to stress my point a little further on the difference colors contribute to making your brand or feed cohesive.

  • One, we want to see which ones look appealing together. This is where the color wheel comes in. It includes the primary, secondary and tertiary colors, which we can refer to when picking out colors for our color palette – making sure that the colors we choose complement each other .

  • Two, the Visual hierarchy: always include neutral colors, and make use of the brighter colors to draw attention (e.g. to highlight buttons or links)

  • Three, (and do not skip this one) the Color psychology and cultural aspects. When choosing colors, think about the feelings you want your brand to exude. Also be mindful that colors have different meanings in different cultures, so keep in mind your target audience here and what each color might mean in their culture.
